Pet-Safe Salt, Treated Salt, Rock Salt: Which One?

Pet-Safe Salt, Treated Salt, Rock Salt: Which One?. Illustration.

Every driveway we clear gets salt on it. What’s in the bag, rock salt, treated salt or pet-safe salt, is the part worth thinking about, because the worst of a Kitchener-Waterloo winter isn’t always the snow itself. It’s the thin glaze after a mild afternoon, or the freezing rain that turns a clean driveway into a skating rink by supper.

What people don’t always know is that there are three different things sitting in those bags, they behave differently, and they aren’t interchangeable. Here’s the plain version of each one and when paying the extra $10 plus HST per visit is worth it.

First, what salt actually does

Salt doesn’t melt ice by being warm. It lowers the temperature at which water freezes. Spread it on ice and it draws in moisture, makes a brine, and that brine eats down until the bond with the concrete lets go. Then the ice lifts instead of gripping.

Two things follow. Salt needs moisture and a little time, so on bone dry ice in hard cold it mostly sits there looking busy. And every salt has a floor: below a certain temperature the brine freezes too and it stops working. That floor is the biggest difference between the three products.

Rock salt: the standard, and it’s included

Rock salt is sodium chloride. Coarse grey or white crystals, the thing almost everyone means when they say salt.

It’s the workhorse for good reason. It’s effective, it’s cheap, and it handles most of a normal Waterloo Region winter without complaint. Standard rock salt is already included in every driveway we clear, both on per-visit snow removal and on the Winter Plans described there. You don’t pay extra for it and you never have to ask.

Where it runs out of road is the cold. Plain rock salt slows right down once it gets properly cold, and in a hard freeze it does very little. It’s also slow to start, and it bounces and scatters, so some of what you spread ends up on the lawn edge rather than the ice.

For most of December and a lot of March, that’s fine. For a January cold snap or freezing rain, it isn’t the tool.

Treated salt: for the cold snaps and the freezing rain

Treated salt is rock salt coated with a liquid brine before it ever hits your driveway. It looks damp and is usually tinted brown or blue, which is just how you tell it apart in the bag.

That coating changes three things. It works colder, through the cold snaps that plain rock salt sleeps through. It works faster, because the crystal arrives already wet instead of waiting around to gather moisture, and on freezing rain the whole fight is whether ice bonds to the concrete in the first place. It stays where you put it, since damp crystals don’t bounce and roll, so more lands on the driveway and less in your grass.

Treated Salt Upgrade is $10 plus HST per visit. Worth it when a hard freeze or freezing rain is in the forecast, or if your driveway glazes over every time the sun comes out and goes back down. North facing drives, shaded lots and anything on a slope are the usual suspects.

Pet-safe salt: for paws, new concrete and garden beds

Pet-safe salt is the one people ask about most, usually for an obvious reason standing beside them with four feet and no boots.

Rock salt is hard on dogs. The crystals are sharp, they work into the soft skin between the pads, and the brine stings any small cut already there. Then the dog licks its paws clean, which is the part nobody wants.

Pet-safe products are formulated to be gentler on paws, and on what sits beside your driveway too. Chloride heavy runoff is what browns off the strip of lawn along the drive every spring and scorches the edge of a garden bed. It also matters on a new pour, which is the most at risk of surface scaling, so if you’ve just had the driveway redone, be careful with salt this winter.

The honest trade-off: gentler generally means a narrower working range. Pet-safe is the right call across normal winter temperatures and not what you want in a deep freeze. It’s also not the same thing as harmless. The Region of Waterloo is direct about this: even the products marketed as environmentally friendly still contain salt and aren’t water friendly, so the goal is using less overall, not finding a version you can use without limit.

Pet-Safe Salt Upgrade is $10 plus HST per visit. Worth it if you have a dog or a cat that goes out front, if your concrete is new, or if you have beds and lawn running tight along the driveway edge.

The quick version

  • Normal KW winter day, nothing unusual: rock salt. Already included, nothing to do.
  • Deep cold or freezing rain in the forecast: treated salt, $10 plus HST per visit.
  • Dog, cat, new concrete, or beds along the drive: pet-safe salt, $10 plus HST per visit.
  • Every visit, no reminders: ask us to make the upgrade standing and it goes on each visit at $10 plus HST. On a Winter Plan, add-ons are quoted with your plan.

How this fits with clearing

We clear after every snowfall of 5 cm or more, usually within 12 hours of the snow stopping. Every visit takes in the driveway, the front path to the door and the city sidewalk out front, with standard rock salt on the driveway. The full list of what’s in a clearing is on the snow removal page.

Per-visit clearing runs from $49.99 plus HST for a one car driveway up to $99.99 plus HST for a four car, with the sizes in between on our pricing page, and up to $219.99 plus HST for a ten car. The season option, Winter Plan Standard, is one price for the whole winter, November 1 to April 15, with unlimited clearings at the 5 cm trigger plus unlimited ice control after freezing rain or light snow. Those run from $712.36 up to $1,424.86 plus HST, by driveway size (1 to 4 car); bigger driveways still get a whole-season price on a Winter plan, all on the snow removal page.

If you’d rather your salt choice and faster clearing come bundled into one season price instead of picked visit by visit, that’s what our Winter plans do. The salt upgrades themselves are still a per-visit line if you’re buying clearing one storm at a time; if you want one across a whole Winter Plan, call us and we’ll put the number in writing rather than guess at it here.

Salt questions we get asked

Do I have to pay extra to get any salt at all? No. Standard rock salt is included in every clearing, per-visit and seasonal. On per-visit clearing the treated and pet-safe upgrades are $10 plus HST per visit. On a Winter Plan, add-ons are quoted with your plan.

Is pet-safe salt completely safe for my dog? Safer, not magic. It’s gentler on paws, skin and plants than rock salt, but any ice melt is still something you don’t want a dog eating. Wipe the paws at the door and keep the bag out of reach.

Can I have pet-safe salt and still be covered in a deep freeze? Yes. Ask for pet-safe as your default and treated salt on the nights the forecast goes properly cold. Each upgrade is $10 plus HST on the visit it’s used.

Why did the grass along my driveway die last spring? That’s usually salt runoff piling up in the same strip all winter. Pet-safe product helps, and so does not over-applying. More salt isn’t more melting, it’s just more salt, and the rest of it ends up in the storm drains and the creeks that feed the Grand River.
